Calling all plagiarists

The Morning News, the American website that recently ran its annual Tournament of Books, has announced another book-themed contest inspired by the controversy over Kaavya Viswanathan’s apparent plagiarism. (Her publisher, Little, Brown, has decided to pull the book from store shelves.) “Inspired by recent events,” the website’s editors wrote, “we wondered not ‘why does anyone plagiarize,’ but ‘why aren’t more people better at plagiarizing?’ And so we are launching a contest to see if there is a ‘writer’ out there who can create a coherent and original piece of fiction completely made from the works of others.” The piece must be 750 words long, all of the plagiarized material must be cited, and entrants must take passages, sentences, or paragraphs from at least five different books. (A tip of the hat to Bookslut for this item.)
