Free to read, you and me
It’s midway through Freedom to Read Week, but there’s still plenty of time to get in on the action. Among the events listed on the online schedule are a mock “trial” for challenged books, to be held at a library in Edmonton on Thursday. Says the FRW website: “The Teen Advisory Board will celebrate Freedom to Read Week by putting books on trial. Teen defenders and prosecutors will argue for and against certain challenged books. Each ‘lawyer’ will have three minutes to argue the case for or against the book. There will be time for questions, following which a jury will decide whether to release or ban the book.”
Elsewhere, McNally Robinson in Calgary is holding a 24-hour reading marathon on Friday; there are readings in London, Ontario and Truro, Nova Scotia on Saturday; and the Red Deer and District Museum is hosting a panel discussion on censorship issues, also on Saturday.
