Crowd pleasers? Not so much
New York Times book reviewer Janet Maslin waded through a pile of “crowd pleasers” — books like Why Do Men Have Nipples? Maslin is largely unimpressed and she has a chosen a couple of her least favourite titles, insulting one with a line last heard on a 1996 episode of Ricki Lake’s daytime talk show. “The most useless So-whats are traditionally linked to either losing weight or getting rich quick,” Maslin writes. “Under the latter heading, The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth recommends writing this on a card: ‘Today I decide to be wealthy.’ Since the book also recommends picking up a paper route for extra income, its confidence becomes touchingly optimistic at best. Still, it’s more useful than What Would Jackie Do? Here is a book that suggests, for instance, mimicking Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ decorative use of firewood. At least it clearly answers its own question: Jackie would kick this one to the curb.”
