Another peek inside Claire’s Head

Author Catherine Bush has an essay on the Bookninja site explaining why she decided to do a major revision on her latest novel — after it had already been published. Bush was unsatisfied with certain parts of the novel and decided to take advantage of the trade paper edition to do another pass over Claire’s Head, a decision that, though unorthodox, is not unprecedented. As Bush explains, in his elder years Henry James took the opportunity to revise many of his early novels when they were republished. Closer to home, Yann Martel’s Life of Pi was tightened in places by his British editor before the novel was published in the U.K. And Bush herself has done the same thing before, revising her novel Minus Time several years after its original publication.
