Jarhead v. jarhead
David Carr of The New York Times has found at least one former Marine upset with Jarhead, the Sam Mendes film based on Anthony Swofford’s non-fiction book about life during the first Gulf War. The delightfully named Joel Turnipseed is the author of another memoir from that war entitled Baghdad Express, and he says that some of the scenes from his book found their way into the film based on Swofford’s. Jarhead screenwriter William Broyles Jr. says he read Turnipseed’s book, but denies intentionally lifting the scenes. Turnipseed has contacted a lawyer, but feels he will be the one who looks bad if he pursues action. “There is no way that I am going to come out ahead on this,” he said. “The guy who says ‘you stole my stuff’ is always the jerk, but this is not something that is based on a scene I did; it is verbatim dialogue.”
