Canadian literary fiction: undersold and under-publicized
The Globe and Mail’s books editor, Martin Levin, outlines the predicament surrounding Canadian literary fiction: under-publicized and therefore undersold. The roots of the publicity problem, he claims, are in the ever-decreasing number of Canadian book-talk venues, the seasonal flow of releases — competitively high in the fall in time for Giller and GG consideration, but low in months like February — and the need for lesser-known authors to compete with a glut of international literary stars, domestic successes, and other must-reviews. He presents his findings — and a preview of the Globe’s fall reviews — in light of this fall’s Canadian fiction releases, which exemplify a national offering that he claims is “richer, deeper and more varied than it has ever been.”
