Bookered Out cold

The winner of the BBC’s Bookered Out contest, Chris Loxley, is keeping an online diary of his progress through the Booker Prize longlist. So far, he’s been left cold by Rachel Cusk’s In the Fold, and fallen in love with James Meek’s The People’s Act of Love. His most recent read, John Banville’s The Sea, had him wishing for a sci-fi escape: “The novel focuses on the sea, so why couldn’t we have seen a legion of underwater zombies rise from the depths, to claim the flesh of the living? How about a terrible sea serpent threatening the livelihood of a small fishing community? Or a killer shark?”
