Bad browsers

In The New York Times, Charles Taylor, a columnist for The Star-Ledger of Newark, writes in to criticize the poor manners of the typical chain store patron. Writes Taylor: “The new-style ‘mega’ complexes in which the shopping mall meets the community arts center have bred a new bookstore culture where it’s virtually impossible to do the thing that used to lure most of us to bookstores: browse.” Taylor suggests a scaling back of the “customer knows best” policy and applauds browse-friendly policies which, according to the author, lead to better sales and minimized irritation.
