Cunningham, Hollinghurst nominated for Big Gay Read
Librarians and publishing agency Commonworld are launching a search for Britain’s favourite gay- or lesbian-themed novel of the year. Inspired by the BBC’s Big Read search, the organizers have dubbed their contest the Big Gay Read, and are hoping to garner a winner through public nominations and voting. So far, suggestions include the following: Jake Arnott’s The Long Firm, Amanda Boulter’sAround the Houses, Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World, Stella Duffy’s Calendar Girl, Jeffrey Eugenides’s Middlesex, Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty, Dorothy Porter’s The Monkey’s Mask, Colm Toibin’s The Story of the Night, Sarah Waters’s Tipping the Velvet, and Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.
