Behind bullshit
In The New Yorker, Jim Holt looks at recent writing on bullshit and pursues a lengthy discussion of absolutism and truth. He touches on Laura Penny’s Your Call Is Important to Us: The Truth About Bullshit, although quickly problematizes her wide-ranging use of the term. He discusses at length Harry G. Frankfurt’s surprisingly bestselling tome, On Bullshit. Writes Holt: “Philosophers have a vocational bent for trying to divine the essences of things that most people never suspected had an essence, and bullshit is a case in point. Could there really be some property that all instances of bullshit possess and all non-instances lack?”
