Literature meets the streets

Street fiction may be edging into the mainstream market, but in an article on Salon.com, James Norton wonders whether the genre speaks to an urban reality or just glorifies gratuitous violence and criminality. Writes Norton: “Its heroes are often pimps, prostitutes and/or drug dealers; the three things most commonly exchanged by its characters are profanities, gunfire and bodily fluids. And beyond questions of content, others worry about street fiction’s creeping acceptance into the black community — especially in schools.”
