Bibliotherapy in northern Ontario

An article this week in The Toronto Star discusses a new program that brings kids in native communities in northern Ontario into close contact with books, via a series of summer literacy camps. The aim is to address suicide rates by boosting self confidence. In the article, reporter Louise Brown quotes Lieutenant-Governor James Bartleman: “‘It’s simple, really. When you can’t read and write, you feel stupid and lose hope. But if we give these children the same thing other kids in Ontario get at day camps — reading materials, sports, and hours of quality time with trained counsellors — it can’t help but tackle the risk of suicide.”
