Respect for romance
At a recent conference for Australian romance writers, authors discussed the difficulty of getting respect and recognition outside the genre. Many had published more than a dozen books, yet rarely saw their books reviewed or discussed. Carolyn Webb, a reporter for The Age newspaper in Melbourne quotes the conference organizer, Alison Brideson: “‘We are serious, intelligent businesswomen — we’re far from the fluffy pink Barbara Cartland cliché,’ she said. ‘We’re trying to overcome the image of the bored housewife knocking out bodice-rippers at the kitchen counter on weekends.’”
