Back to the barracks
On Salon.com, an article revisits the pulp classic Women’s Barracks as it is about to be reissued by Feminist Press. When the book was first released in 1950, its descriptions of lesbian relationships and sexual encounters led to its wide censorship — in Canada. Courts “concluded after two days of deliberations that it didn’t educate, but encouraged girls to go down that wayward path, and ruled it obscene.” Christine Smallwood conducts a lengthy interview with the author, Tereska Torres.
