The axe murderer
TheTyee.com is featuring a two-part interview with John Vaillant about the story behind his new book, The Golden Spruce. The story tracks the life and possible death of Grant Hadwin, who in 1997 axed the golden spruce, a beautiful and rare tree significant to the Haida nation. In an interview with Hal Wake, Vaillant describes his conflicted subject: “I think Hadwin was a ticking bomb, but I also think he was in a schizophrenic situation. In the sense that he was a guy who was at his best when he was on his own in the wilderness, and the wilderness was receding out away from him.”
