A step forward for bibliotherapy

According to Welsh mental health patients, prescribing books instead of pills may be a good idea. After a two-year pilot project in Cardiff, the incorporation of literature into the psychiatrist’s artillery seems to be getting good marks from patients and advocates, who say it cuts down on the number of unnecessary prescriptions. According to an article on the BBC website, “A list of 33 books has been compiled by medical experts in Wales and they will all be available through GPs and libraries across Wales.” No word on what those books are — any bets? The Bell Jar, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Portnoy’s Complaint, A Fan’s Notes, The Catcher in the Rye?
