Insipid pap for the newsstand

Since its inception in 1993, the Chicken Soup for the Soul series has generated $1.3-billion in revenues in North America — now, a private company called Modern Media is trying to translate the series’s golden reputation in book publishing into success in the magazine world. The first issue of Chicken Soup for the Soul magazine, a “magazine for the soul,” will hit stands next week. As The New York Times reports, the publisher and editor-in-chief is J. Mignonne Wright, the former publisher of the now-defunct American Magazine, “a short-lived bimonthly that celebrated life in the United States.”
