Praise for the fiery reviewer
An article discussing the hatred of — and necessity for — reviewers is posted by Alex Good on GoodReports.net. After looking at Norman Mailer’s recent outburst against New York Times reviewer Michiko Kakutani, Good discusses the purpose of reviews — whether or not they have anything to do with books sales, and whether they are unnecessarily bland. “According to [Scott] Pack our book review pages are ‘very dull.’ I agree… . But I don’t think we should be too quick to shoot the messengers. A lot of books today are very dull, and a lot of what passes for literary culture is pretty bland,” writes Good.
