Space Invaders
Canadian sci-fi writers are returning to their roots, writes Vancouver Province books editor Peter Darbyshire on CBC Arts this week. The “new old wave” of writers is moving away from cyberpunk themes, he writes, bringing back old themes like alien invasions and outer-space adventures. Darbyshire takes a long look at new-old writers like Robert Sawyer and Karl Schroeder, and dwells mainly on Robert Charles Wilson. He concludes: “Wilson has dismissed any notion of a broad Canadian sci-fi movement, but clearly the direction these writers are taking in their work is more than just a trend. Perhaps it’s more accurate to call them a bridge, one that links the sci-fi of the past with the sci-fi of the future.”
