The Tolkien effect

The Guardian is reporting that profits at HarperCollins U.K. were down by 30% last year, in part due to a declining interest in Tolkien books. A couple of the firm’s other big titles also underperformed, and a bid to publish Sean Connery’s autobiography fell through. Apparently no one is panicking, though. Executives have assured employees that the slump is the natural result of the close of the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films in 2003 (HarperCollins has the rights to the Tolkien series in the U.K. and Canada).
