From Satan’s Slave to Orange Prize longlist

The longlist for this year’s Orange Prize for Fictionwas announced today. No Canadians managed to find their way on to the list of 20 that includes, among others, the prolific Joyce Carol Oates, Kate Atkinson, and “tattooed former biker chick” Joolz Denby. The Scotsman‘s Orange Prize story, which features one of the all-time best leads for the usually bland task of writing up the announcement of a literary prize’s longlist, goes on to make much of Denby’s colourful past. “Denby, 49, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, who has 25 piercings and dozens of tattoos, married a member of the Satan’s Slaves when she was 19. For the past 25 years she has toured with the cult band New Model Army and worked as a performance poet, regularly appearing at the Glastonbury Festival.” (Hat tip: Bookninja.)
