Diplomacy 101
Canadian writers are a pretty domesticated, polite lot if a series of interviews with Rebecca Caldwell in The Globe and Mail is anything to go by. Caldwell asked a set of questions to the six authors nominated for the Giller Prize, including “Have you already written an acceptance speech?” and “What would you do with the $25,000 if you won?” The responses made the finalists all sound like the the kind of date you’d be proud to bring home to meet your parents. None of the finalists are – apparently – presumptuous enough to have prepared an acceptance speech. As to the question of what to do with the prize money: the home renovation industry may be seeing a $25,000 sales spike in the next couple of months.
