Martel tops Orange Word festival

The Orange Word festival, a literary festival that runs weekly readings over the course of three months in downtown London, England, has announced that Yann Martel will open this year’s event with a reading from a collection of his short stories. The title of that collection is less clear. The Guardian article on the Orange Word festival reports the title as We Ate the Children Last, while Canongate, Martel’s UK publisher, and all the major British online booksellers have the collection listed as The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, Martel’s 1993 debut story collection, which is being published in the U.K. this month. So where did the Guardian get the Children Last title, since there is not even a story of that name in the original collection? The confusion may have something to do with a story by Martel that has so far only appeared in the Guardian website’s “Original Fiction” section. The name of that story is “We Ate the Children Last,” and we assume will be included in the U.K. version of Roccamatios.
