See, reading really is sexy

The great marketing minds at Penguin Books UK may have finally found a way to get the male demographic reading: by promoting books as chick magnets. A new survey sponsored by the publisher and played up in a new ad campaign has, apparently, scientifically proven that women are more attracted to men who read. More to the point, the survey claims that “eight of every ten people polled said they believe book readers are likely to be much better in bed.” As if the lads needed any more encouragement, the Penguin website devoted to this new promotion assures customers that they “may not even need to read [the book], just bend the covers, let it stick out of your pocket and the book will do the talking!” An article on the Poets & Writers Magazine website claims that not everyone thinks the campaign is good for the trade. As one bookseller put it in a typically understated British manner: “I don’t think it’s a particularly classy way of going about selling books.”
