Man Booker judge tells all
Tibor Fischer’s appointment to this year’s Man Booker Prize jury has the British novelist wondering, among other things, why publishers are putting out so many dull novels. Though Fischer insists that only about a half-dozen of the 126 novels that he read were “a discredit to the industry,” he was astounded at the number of entries “that were pointless. Not bad, not reproachable in any way except one: they were utterly nondescript (mind you, there’s always been a clique in literary London who feel that real literature should be dry, colourless, a bit of a penance — if you’re enjoying it, it can’t be literature).” Fischer doesn’t name names in this column for the Telegraph, though he does provide a list of the books he did enjoy reading, none of which are by Canadian authors.
