This just in: arts organizations chronically underfunded

An article in PEI’s The Guardian reports on a speech delivered in Charlottetown by John Hobday, director of the Canada Council for the Arts. Hobday was speaking at the Confederation Centre of the Arts on Tuesday when he told the audience that without increased federal funding to the Council many of the country’s most cherished arts organizations may have to shut their doors, harming the communities and economies in which they are located. In the meantime, Hobday said, the Council is trying to “enhance the capacity of arts organizations to sustain artistic excellence through an increased attention to organizational health.” But even if the Council meets this goal, Hobday said that the only long term solution is increased funding.
