The 2012 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced today, but you won’t find a recipient in the fiction category. Publishers Lunch reports that the Pulitzer board “failed to reach a majority” in selecting a winner for the $10,000 award.

The fiction jury, made up of Maureen Corrigan, critic-in-residence at Georgetown University, novelist Michael Cunningham, and Susan Larson, host of the radio program The Reading Life, shortlisted Denis Johnson’s Train Dreams, Karen Russell’s Swamplandia!, and David Foster Wallace’s The Pale King for the honour.

This is the eleventh time that a Pulitzer has not been distributed in the fiction category since the prize was founded 95 years ago. The last time was in 1977.

Winners of the annual awards, administered by Columbia University, were revealed in the fields of journalism, letters, drama, and music. Winners in the letters and drama categories are:
